Traumatic Irony: The America Play

Rejecting traumatic realism, the New Trauma playwrights stage trauma's gravitational effects with an emphasis on unseen terror rather than graphic horror. History and narrative become a series of effacements or gaps that the audience must fill in. By doing so, trauma is rehearsed rather than mapped, and the direct representation of trauma-events eschewed or mediated. Suzan-Lori Parks's The America Play (1994) considers African American history as a trauma that can never come into full visibility because American culture has disavowed it. Like Caruth, Parks conceives traumatic history in terms of possession. She writes:
